Julian and I have started moving into a new space to grow our respective creative ventures. Julian will use it to create his incredible art and develop Inward Arrows, while I’ll use it as a place to dive deeper into my photography and, of course, my signature loafing.
By the way, it was Julian’s birthday yesterday! He still has some stock of Inward Arrows hats and hoodies and limited prints available. If you haven’t snagged one yet, what are you waiting for? Head over to InwardArrow.store do it!
Before we fully transform the space, I felt compelled to document it as it is now. And the best way I know how? With an old camera and a roll of film.
This will be my area, and Craig is helping me with shelving and desk setups. At first, J and I thought, "We can probably handle it ourselves." But Craig is a craftsman—and a recently self-proclaimed "high-value friend" (which, to be fair, is absolutely true).
I told him, "Craig, I’m never going to buy my own tools or stock up on materials." His response was the moment he declared himself a high value friend. Julian and I will be doing our best to help out while building the pieces.
These walls will be where Julian creates his masterpieces; every artist needs a white wall.
We got lucky that our space has a lot of natural lighting, which makes everything more interesting. We haven’t committed to what we are calling this space yet.
Studio, warehouse, atrium, the spot, space, etc., have all been suggested.
I think 'studio' works best. If you Google 'studio,' the definition is:
a room where an artist, photographer, etc. works.
While writing this it seems obvious now that studio is the answer.
Loaf Made Studios / Inward Arrows Studio / Berto & Julian , Julian & Berto Studios.
Exciting stuff, to say the least! I made a brief YouTube video about this—check it out if you have the time:
Curiosities
Must Watch Films
(The only films ever listed here will be ones that I consider mandatory viewings in ones lifetime)
Rear Window (1954) - Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
It is a perfect movie. A masterclass in tension and it takes place from a small war photographers apartment. Hitchcock = Cinema
Bo Burnhan: Inside (2021) - Everything by Bo Burnham
It all takes place in a strange little room, it is an explosion of creativity. Every single thing about it comes from Burnham’s mind and talent. The truest form of modern day renaissance man.
This Is Cool
Tom Sachs is an artist, his art work is fine, some are cool. But his studio is the holy grail. All makers and artist of any kind should now of him and be open to learning from him. He created a studio handbook of rules he calls 10 Bullets. Here is a fantastic video going over it.
An Item Worth Owning
The Best Made Red notebook. I've gone through two of the original designs, and they've now reopened and rereleased it, but it's now a hardcover notebook. I thought I wouldn’t like it as much, but it’s actually far more functional. I can write on the left side without a surface now—a simple design change that added much function. It is the perfect notebook.
Two quote’s from a good book I read
“In creative work-creative work of all kinds—those who are the world’s working artists are not trying to help the world go around, but forward.”
“Neither is it possible to control, or regulate, the machinery of creativity. One must work with the creative powers—for not to work with is to work against; in art as in spiritual life there is no neutral place”
- Mary Oliver Upstream
How about A&J’s Studio or AJ’s Studio after your papa Al? ❤️🥰
But also after you and Ju
